Visit :

This commentary is titled; OVER FED

I’m uncertain if Thanksgiving is about giving thanks to Nature’s God for the blessings of the past year or if Thanksgiving is concerned with stuffing your face with as much food as you can shovel into your mouth.

I was invited to meet with relatives for the expected food fest on Thursday and there was more food on display than I believe I have ever seen gathered on one table and under one roof in all of my life. If I had even taken a small sample of everything available I would have burst out of my britches.

Most all of my relatives had gathered and they had brought along friends and family, husbands and wives, sons and daughters, nieces and nephews, aunts and uncles, as well as strangers who had stopped by for a visit and a few passersby off the street. It was a crowd! I don’t believe I got around to meeting everyone. In fact, I doubt I even saw every person there.

And, of course, it did not fall to my cousin in whose house the event was held to provide all the food. Pretty much all the women who showed up brought food with them so that the edibles kept piling up. I thought for a while the table that was assigned to hold the food would collapse under the strain.

But disaster was averted and the table managed to do its duty without complaint. People dug in and a good time was had by all.

After the feast the men waddled off to the living room to watch sports and the women gathered in the kitchen to clean up, store away the excess food and gossip. The kids ran outside for games and I sat back in a corner to take a short nap.

When I awakened, the television was still on and the men were sneaking back to the kitchen for snacks. I’m not much into televised sports, so I told the hostess how I enjoyed the meal and snuck out the back door to return home.

It may have been a long weekend for some, but I have deadlines and I had to be up early next morning.

Still it was a good feed and I enjoyed the time with friends and relatives.

May the sun always shine on your parade!
